… to Eugene Watson’s website dedicated to the art of making sculptural boxes. Eugene has been making his unusual jewelry boxes since 1990 and has won numerous awards while being featured in many books and magazines. Throughout the 90’s he was traveling the country from coast to caost selling his boxes at art fairs. From 2000 – present he focused his efforts on mastering his existing designs, creating new designs, and selling to high end american craft galleries throughout the USA and in exhibitions in the UK. Most of Eugene’s boxes are sold to box collectors, people seeking gifts for men and women, and those who seek a jewelry box that is also a work of art.
The woods used in his jewelry boxes are of the highest quality and come from various regions around the world. Woods used from Mexico are Cocobolo, Zircote, Granadillo,Chechen; from Central America are Canarywood, Redheart, Plantation Lacewood, Rosewood; from North america he uses figured woods including Maple, Walnut, Myrtle, Cherry, Mesquite, Ironwood (for inlays); and from Africa he uses Bubinga and Wenge. This is a current list and it fluctuates with availability of quality wood and cost.
With the exception of the Pinnacle Box and the Cricket Box, all compartments are lined with genuine recycled Ultrasuede. This is a very soft, classy, and expensive material perfect for protecting and storing jewelry. Also, it will not speed up the tarnishing of silver jewelry like some other materials will.
The Helical , Pinnacle , and Trapezoid jewelry boxes all have secret compartments which are held in place with rare-earth magnets. These compartments make efficient use of space in the boxes that would normally be unused. The Trapezoid Box also has hidden in its base 1 pound of buckshot to give it balance when all the trays are opened and to give it a look of defying gravity.
All of Eugene’s jewelry boxes are finished using a proprietary blend of natural resins which he perfected in his 20 years of box making. Each piece is then meticulously hand polished for a beautiful look and feel.
